Wilvo Metal Processing is a well-known supplier to the high-tech industry, manufacturing metal and aluminum base frames and machined parts for a renowned manufacturer of lithography systems. Wilvo approached PTB to develop a machine for transporting the special products they produce to and within cleanrooms. Designing a transport vehicle with high lifting capacity and suitable for use in cleanrooms is unique.
Wilvo processes special metals and produces precise products, including extremely large frames in steel and aluminum for the electronic and lithographic industry. High demands are placed on the manufacturing of parts for chip-producing machines because no dust particles are allowed to be released.
The large and heavy frames, weighing 3,000 kilograms and measuring 3,600 x 2,400 mm, are cleaned and sterilized in autoclaves located in cleanrooms. Wilvo needed a machine with low weight that would be suitable for moving these frames within the cleanroom and positioning them in the autoclave.
Maneuvering with the frames had to take place within very limited space. Additionally, strict requirements were imposed on the design, finishing, and the selection of components and materials for a machine used in a cleanroom.
For a cleanroom version, the machine's own weight must not be too high because cleanroom floors cannot withstand heavy loads. Most importantly, the potential emission of microscopic dust particles must be minimized.
PTB has all the required expertise and developed a machine that meets these criteria. The result is a custom stacker with a lifting capacity of 3,000 kilograms at a load center of 1,800 millimeters.
The stacker, operated with a tiller handle, is specially constructed for lifting heavy and voluminous products such as Wilvo's impressive heavy and large frames. Stackers with such lifting capacity are unique in the internal transport market.
To construct a stacker with a lifting capacity of 3 tons at a 1,800 mm load point, the base frame of the machine designed by PTB had to be calculated for a load of an astonishing 11,000 kilograms. Stackers with this capacity that also meet the various cleanroom ISO levels are not readily available elsewhere.
If the customer wanted to perform the same logistical operation with a conventional machine, a large 12-ton electric forklift would be required. Such a machine is not a realistic option due to its size, weight, and the impossibility of achieving a "cleanroom-ready" version.
A stacker, on the other hand, is easier to make "cleanroom-ready" due to its construction. All parts of the PTB machine that come into contact with Wilvo's products or the environment in which the machine operates are made of stainless steel or equipped with Inox coatings.
The stacker features, among other things:
• Inox bumper strips around the machine.
• Specially forged stainless steel-coated forks designed exclusively for PTB.
• Special stainless steel chains.
• Special wheels, protections, and lubricants.
Stainless steel is applied on this cleanroom machine because it does not corrode and does not leave unwanted paint or coating particles or other dust particles when damaged.
The PTB ESD30 is a compact, ergonomic, and easy-to-maintain solution for transporting heavy machine parts within a cleanroom. The product is entirely custom-made. PTB has already delivered several machines with this and lower capacities that meet cleanroom classification requirements.
