Deutsche Bahn Orders Custom Bogie Transporter

Some time ago PTB Special Products was contacted by Deutsche Bahn to design a special transportation truck. The renowned railway company approached PTB because of PTB’s experience in constructing heavy load equipment. PTB was asked to find a solution for the transportation of the heavy train bogies within DB’s workshop.

Deutsche Bahn is the national railway operator in Germany. Deutsche Bahn exploits trains and buses on an extensive international public transportation network. The maintenance of their railway equipment takes place in several facilities throughout Germany. In order to maintain the bogies of the trains, the bogies are detached from the coach and taken into a maintenance shop. The transportation of these train bogies is quite labor intensive, because the bogies weigh up to 15 thousand kilograms each.

PTB has experience when it comes to designing special heavy load trucks for train bogies. A couple of years ago PTB designed a truck for another railway operator, for the transportation of train bogies within their workshop as well. Deutsche Bahn was researching a solution for moving bogies; therefore, the company found the solution among PTB’s product portfolio.

Together with Deutsche Bahn, PTB has procured a preliminary design to optimize the transportation of DB’s bogies. The truck will feature a long slanted platform on which a winch will be installed. A winch will haul the bogie of a set of train rails onto the truck’s platform. The design of the truck is based on PTB’s modular 15 tons chassis, equipped with a tailor-made platform. The chassis features a driver’s seat, a powerful electric motor and cameras.
